Rosemary's Baby (1968)

Last Updated: Feb 2025

Rosemary (Mia Farrow) and Guy Woodhouse (John Cassavetes) move into an apartment in a building with a bad reputation. They discover that their neighbours are a very friendly elderly couple named Roman and Minnie Castevet, and Guy begins to spend a lot of time with them. Strange things start to happen: a woman Rosemary meets in the washroom dies a mysterious death, Rosemary has strange dreams and hears strange noises and Guy becomes remote and distant. Then Rosemary falls pregnant and begins to suspect that her neighbours have special plans for her child.

otsoNY Comments: The Dakota takes the place of the fictional Bramford.

otsoNY Comments: Interior sets of the Bramford apartments were done on sound stages at Paramount Studios in Hollywood. Some additional location shooting took place in Playa del Rey. Though Paramount had initially agreed to spend $1.9 million to make the film, the shoot was overextended due to Polanski's meticulous attention to detail, which resulted in his completing up to fifty takes of single shots. The shoot suffered significant scheduling problems as a result, and ultimately went $400,000 over budget.

otsoNY Comments: The scene was successfully shot with Mia Farrow walking into real traffic and director Roman Polanski following, operating the hand-held camera since he was the only one willing to do it.
